BANDARANAIKE CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDIES - COLOMBO

The Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies, Commonly known as the BCIS, is the academic-wing of the S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike National Memorial Foundation, a statutory institute established under Act of Parliament No. 2 of 1975.

The BCIS is a non-profit, tertiary level education institute specializing in all aspects of international relations including training, research and advanced studies.

mmSeminar on User Educationmm

A Seminar on User Education focusing on how to maximize the utilization of Information Resources and how to effectively use the BCIS library and its services will be held on the 31st of May 2008 at the BCIS Auditorium from 8.30 a.m- 11.00 a.m. This program would be of benefit to all BCIS students and all students are advised to attend this event.

 

mmConflict in Sri Lanka: Road Ahead

The BCIS in collaboration with the CSA (Center for Security Analysis) an independent, non- profit think tank based in Chennai, India hosted an international seminar titled “Conflict in Sri Lanka: Road Ahead” on the 26th and 27th of March 2008 at the BCIS auditorium. The seminar proved to be a fitting academic forum for discussing and exploring the current dimensions of Sri Lanka’s Peace Process, its local and regional implications and the way forward. The seminar was attended by nearly 60 participants including high level government officials, members of civil society and BCIS faculty and students. The Indian delegation was headed by Retired Lt. Gen V.R Raghavan of the CSA. The Seminar consisted of four distinct sessions, Session one focusing on Political Measures- Implementing the 13th Amendment, Session two on, The Military Offensive: Political Interface, Session three on, Economic and Development Issues and Session four on, The International Dimension pertaining to the Sri Lankan conflict. mmThe Inauguration Ceremony of the International Relations Division was held on the 15th March 2008 from 9:30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. at the BCIS Auditorium. The Chief Guest was Prof. Amal Jayawardene, Dean, Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo. A total of 190 students were enrolled in the new batch.

mmSri Lanka Youth Parliament- Skills Manual Launch
The Sri Lanka Youth Parliament (SLYP) an initiative hosted by the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS) will launch its publication “SLYP Skills Manual for Young Social Change Activists” on the 18th of March 2008 at 4.00 p.m at the BCIS premises. The Chief Guest on this occasion will be U.S Ambassador Robert O’ Blake. The SLYP skills manual is being released with the intention of sharing knowledge gained through extensive training and capacity building acquired during the SLYP projects 2005-2007 action cycle.

nnYCL Application Launch

The Youth Empowerment Division of the BCIS held its Application Launching Ceremony for the Young Community Leaders (YCL) Programme on the 13th of March 2008 at 4.00 P.M at the BCIS auditorium. The Chief Guest on this occasion was Hon. Pavithra Wanniarachchi- Minister of Youth Affairs.mm

 

Programmes

International Relations Programme
The Centre boasts a history of 30 years and it is the pioneer institute in Sri Lanka in the study of international relations.



Conflict Resolution Programme
In collaboration with the United Nations University for Peace (UPEACE) is expected to form the nucleus of conflict resolution and peace studies in Sri Lanka with a view to networking the South Asian region under the Asia Pacific Programme of the UPEACE


A number of language courses are conducted by the center with a view to fostering and promoting friendly relationship among Nations.



English Language Training Programme has been established to help people working in the private, public and semi-government sectors upgrade their abilities to use English for professional purposes.


The Sri Lanka Youth Parliamenentis a youth led, youth run initiative,SLYP Logo
whose aim is to mobilize and create a network of young people to bring about positive and sustainable change to issues that affect youth and their communities in Sri Lanka.
